About the Author
After writing The Long Goodbye, in which I explored the experience of losing my father to Alzheimer's, I have written several novels — Till Human Voices Wake Us, The Earth Breaks in Colors, and The Wrong Side of Night. But the lessons I learned from the ten years of my father's illness stayed with me and wanted more of a voice. In 2011 I created a support group program for caregivers of people with dementia, called Beyond Alzheimer's. My new book, Floating in the Deep End, is an extension of that support group — a handbook for those on the perilous and sorrowful journey of losing a loved one to this mysterious disease. It is also part memoir, as many of the memories of my own experience have taken on a different resonance with time and reflection. My hope is that people will find guidance and comfort in this book. I titled it Floating in the Deep End because that's how it feels when Alzheimer's enters your life, but you do get to the other side, you do get to dry land, even though at times it feels like you're drowning.
