Advocacy is the way in which, we, as citizens, can play an active role in shaping our policies and building better communities. Advocacy 101 is designed to help navigate the many legal and policy changes that are continuing to come this way. We will spend the evening discussing ways to engage decision makers as a means to advancing and protecting the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

There are many ways to be an advocate, but sharing a common policy agenda with a like-minded community is one of the strongest ways to be effective. In an age when so much of our time is spent online, how do we turn likes and supportive comments into a coalition of people working toward a common vision? The discussion will focus on relational organizing, social media, and effective resources and tools used in organizing both in person and online.

As the noise of the day continues to fill our news feeds and the news cycle continues 24/7, it is often easy to lose our message in a sea of perspectives. It’s human nature to react to bad news and good news alike. However, creating a cohesive and coordinated communication plan and sticking to it can do so much more than a one-off comment or unstructured debate. We will explore ways in which we can convey a united message topped with our own fit and flair and how important audience is when determine how and what to say.

Using advocacy skills “on the line” can be one of the most exciting ways to use our voices and get the message out. Protesting is both a necessary and effective way to influence policy. It does not come without risks though. We will discuss the internal process of preparing and participating in a protest from deciding what you are able or willing to risk to knowing what rights you have if find yourself arrested. An emphasis will specifically be placed on how important it is to engage in self-care and self-reflection.
